#OnThisDay 1678 Peter Graf Von Lacy was born in Limerick. Lacy at 13 years old served with Sarsfield at Limerick & was one of the original Wild Geese who left for Europe. Lacy later became one of the most successful Imperial Russian military commanders.
#OnThisDay 1952 Marine PFC John Patrick White from Kerry, Ireland was taken prisoner by the North Korean Army during battle of Bunker Hill near Chorok-Tong and was never heard from again. Two years later, on St. Patrick’s Day 1954, White was declared dead. His remains were never recovered.
White moved to New York at 19 & enlisted in the Marines there.
#OnThisDay 1950 Tom Cusack (right) from Clare & Fr Jack O’Brien from Roscommon (an ex-WW2 Chaplain: left)were executed by the North Korean Army (KPA). The KPA were fleeing Daejeon City & shot dead all their prisoners, including the two Columban missionaries.
#OnThisDay 1798 Bartholomew Teeling, a United Irishman & the hero the Battle of Collooney was hanged for treason at Arbor Hill Prison in Dublin. From the gallows he said; ‘If to have striven to make my fellow-men love each other was guilt, then I am guilty’.
#OnThisDay 1943 Sgt. William Patrick Maher from Clonmel, Tipperary was killed in action. Maher was a bomb aimer aboard an RAF Halifax JD457. Maher’s plane (and 19 other RAF planes) were shot down as they flew over Mannheim, Germany on a clear night sky.
