I have my B.A. in History, my M.A. in Military History and Strategic Studies,a Post Qualification Diploma in History and I've been teaching History for five years now. IV Richard O’Carroll Dies from Wounds from Rising 1916

#OnThisDay 1916 Richard O’Carroll died from wounds having been shot by Capt Bowen-Colthurst nine days earlier during the Rising. O’Carroll was prominent trade unionist, a founding member of the Labour Party & organised O’Donovan Rossa’s funeral.

John MacBride Executed in Killmainham Gaol 1916

#OnThisDay 1916 John MacBride was executed in Kilmainham Gaol. The Rising took him by surprise but he joined & fought in Jacob’s Factory. His role leading the pro-Boer Irish Transvaal Brigade during the Boer War sealed his fate. He asked not to be blindfolded.

Joseph Plunkett Executed Kilmainham Gaol 1916

#OnThisDay 1916 Joseph Plunkett was executed in Kilmainham Gaol. Just hours before his death, Plunkett was married to republican artist Grace Gifford. They were allowed 10 minutes in a cell together with a soldier counting down. They mostly sat in silence.

Ned Daly Executed in Kilmainham Gaol 1916

#OnThisDay 1916 Edward ‘Ned’ Daly from Limerick,was executed in Kilmainham Gaol. He told his sister, Kathleen Clarke, before his death that he was “glad and proud to die for his country & that he knew the week’s work would bring new life to Ireland.” He was 25.

Willie Pearse Executed, Kilmainham Gaol 1916

#OnThisDay 1916 William Pearse was executed in Kilmainham Gaol. Although he was the only one to plead guilty in his trial, Willie did not hold a senior position like the others. The real reason for his death, was for being was being Patrick Pearse’s brother.
