Francis Sheehy Skeffington executed by ‘insane’ British Officer 1916

#OnThisDay 1916 Francis Sheehy Skeffington, the pacifist writer was executed by Captain Bowen-Colthurst. Skeffy was arrested while trying to prevent looting. Two journalists were also executed. Bowen-Colthurst was found guilty but insane & did one year in an asylum.

Lieutenant Edward P. Doherty captor of John Wilkes Booth 1865

#OnThisDay 1865 Abraham Lincoln’s assassin John Wilkes Booth was shot & killed by a US Army detachment led by Lieutenant Edward P. Doherty, whose parents were from Sligo. Doherty was promoted to Captain & rewarded over $5000. His tombstone records the capture.

Volunteer Thomas Traynor hanged in Mountjoy 1921

#OnThisDay 1921 IRA Volunteer Thomas Traynor was hanged in Mountjoy Prison. Traynor, a boot-maker and father of ten, fought in 1916 & shared a cell with Sean MacEoin. He was captured during an ambush on Auxiliaries on Brunswick St, Dublin. He is one of ‘The Forgotten Ten’.

Argentinian born Volunteer, Eamon Bulfin raised the Irish Republic Flag over the GPO 1916

#OnThisDay 1916 The Irish Republic flag flew over the GPO. It was raised by Eamon Bulfin, an Argentinian born Volunteer (whose father was from Offaly). He was sentenced to death but was commuted because of his nationality.He was deported after time in Frongoch.

Munster Fusiliers lose 70% of men at Gallipoli 1915

#OnThisDay 1915 Captain G.W. Geddes, Officer Commanding X Company Munster Fusiliers disembarked the collier ship Clyde at V Beach in Gallipoli. He made it to the beach but the next 48 men did not. Geddes later wrote that he lost 70% of his men.
