Hi, I'm David, I'm from Ireland. I am an avid fan of history. I have my B.A. in History, my M.A. in Military History and Strategic Studies,a Post Qualification Diploma in History and I've been teaching History for five years now. Tom “Scarteen” O’Connor and Brother Executed Kenmare1922

#OnThisDay 1922 The IRA attack Kenmare, Kerry. The IRA kill Tom ‘Scarteen’ O’Connor, O/C of the Free State soldiers in the town & his brother, John. They captured 120 Free State troops, 110 rifles & 20,000 rounds of ammo. They later release the FS troops.

Tom Kettle dies as 16th Irish Division take Ginchy 1916

#OnThisDay 1916 Tom Kettle, the poet & Home Rule politician, died at the Battle of Ginchy when he & the 16th Irish Division attacked the village. The Irishmen took the village but at great cost. Interestingly, Lt. Emmet Dalton was present & survived.

Dr Dorothy Stopford-Price, CnaB, IRA Doc & BCG Vaccinator Born today 1890

#OnThisDay 1890 Dr Dorothy Stopford was born in Dublin. Stopford joined Cumann na mBan & medical officer to the Kilbrittain IRA in Cork during the War of Independence. Later in life she introduced the BCG vaccine & helped eradicate tuberculosis in Ireland.

The Battle of Barking Creek 1939

#OnThisDay 1939 Montague Hulton-Harrop was the RAF’s first fighter pilot casualty at the Battle of Barking Creek. He was shot down in a friendly fire incident by John Freeborn & Dublin-man Flying Officer Vincent Byrne (Pic). Both were acquitted.

VOLUNTEER SECTION COMMANDER LIAM HEGARTY KIA 1920

#OnThisDay 1920 William Hegarty Section Commander 1st Cork Brigade, IRA was shot dead in Ballymakeera. The British Army left armed troops in a hidden compartment in a supposed abandoned truck & when Hegarty neared the truck for inspection, with the intention to strip and burn it, he was shot & killed.
