Hi, I'm David, I'm from Ireland. I am an avid fan of history. I have my B.A. in History, my M.A. in Military History and Strategic Studies,a Post Qualification Diploma in History and I've been teaching History for five years now. #OnThisDay 1600 Lord Mountjoy & his English army tried to force their way through the Moyry Pass to Armagh. They were stopped by Hugh O’Neill who fought them for hours until Mountjoy had to withdraw. Mountjoy tried again days later but again was forced back. Mountjoy then left for Dundalk and O’Neill left the Pass unguarded.

16th BN Royal Irish Rifles Leave for the Western Front 1915

#OnThisDay 1915 The 16th Royal Irish Rifles were ordered to leave camp for France. They were unexpected at Southampton, slept on the docks, sailed through a storm on a crowded ship. At Le Havre there was no beds or food & nobody knew where they had to go!

US Marine Cpl Philip Sean Bancroft KIA 1968

#OnThisDay Cpl Philip Sean Bancroft (19)from Belfast died ‘as a result of fragmentation wounds to the head and body from hostile mortar fire while in a defensive position’ while serving with the US Marines in Vietnam. Bancroft enlisted in Pittsburgh.

USS The Sullivans Commissioned by US Navy 1943

#OnThisDay 1943 The US Navy commissioned USS “The Sullivans” in honour of the five Sullivan brothers who lost their lives when their ship USS Juneau was sunk by a Japanese sub in Guadalcanal in November 1942. The Sullivans were from Iowa.
