#OnThisDay 1917 the SS Adela left Dublin for Liverpool carrying cattle & cargo. It was sank by the German submarine U-100 killing 24 crew, 12 from Dublin. Only the captain, Michael Tyrell survived. Ten months later the U-100 would sink the RMS Leinster. #Ireland #History #WW1
#OnThisDay 1920 Martin Conway (pic) & four other IRA Volunteers were killed by Black & Tans as they raided a dance in Cahirguillamore House, Limerick which was to raise funds for the Bruff IRA. 150 men and 90 women were taken prisoner by the Crown Forces who beat them mercilessly.

#OnThisDay 1916 Some of the last of the Irish prisoners from the Easter Rising are released from Frongoch Prison. Known as the University of Revolution, many of the internees would go on to lead the War of Independence like Michael Collins, fifth from right.
#OnThisDay 1776 The US Continental army inflicted a small but pivotal defeat on Hessian forces at Trenton, New Jersey. The Americans capture 900 enemy soldiers & lose 2 themselves. One of the American leaders is General John Sullivan whose parents were from Cork and descended from the O’Sullivan Beare family.
