#OnThisDay 1920 Auxiliary Major John MacKinnon, “the Scourge of Tralee” shot two IRA Volunteers, John Leen & Maurice Reidy, in Mrs Byrne’s home. He then burned her house down as a warning to all. Mackinnon was shot in April by an IRA sniper while playing golf.
#OnThisDay 1832 Brigadier General Thomas Alfred Smyth was born in Ballyhooly, Cork. Smyth fought at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville & Gettysburg. He was shot in the mouth by a sniper and died on the last day of the American Civil War. Quite the unlucky record. #Ireland #History
#OnThisDay 1923 Joe Lacey, 25, died from complications as a result of Hunger Strike at the Curragh Hospital. He was brother to Dinny Lacey, IRA, “the toughest leader in Ireland” who was killed earlier in March of that year fighting the Free State in Tipperary. #Ireland #History
#OnThisDay 1601 Hugh O’Neill, O’Donnell & allies lost the Battle of Kinsale to Lord Mountjoy. Had it went in the Irish favour, Irish & world history would be very different, from the Ulster Plantation to the settling of America. Follow @neilojim1972 for more. #Ireland #History
