#OnThisDay 1822 Brigadier General Richard Busteed was born in Cavan. His family moved to New York & he became a lawyer. Despite being a bitter opponent to Lincoln, after the attack on Fort Sumtner, he joined the army & became a ‘staunch defender of the Union’.
#OnThisDay 1921 Thirteen men of the IRA 3rd Cork Brigade ambushed a train at Upton train station. Intel said 13 British soldiers were on board but it was actually 50. A firefight ensued killing 3 IRA, 6 civilians & wounding 2 IRA, 10 Civilians & 5 Essex soldiers.
On 28/6/22 soldier John Kennedy, ran to the Pro Cathedral during a lull in fighting on O’Connell street to get married to his love Mary Douglas. He returned to duty after the ceremony & was fatally wounded. Mary never remarried. #Ireland #History #HappyValentinesDay #ValentinesDay
#OnThisDay 1974 Róisín Madigan O’Reilly passed away in Dingle, Kerry. In 1916 O’Reilly was the youngest member of Cumann na mBán at the age of 13!! Later in life to work on preservation of many Irish works like the Brehon Laws & stories of Peig Sayers.
#OnThisDay 1922 A bomb was thrown into a group of children playing on a swing on a lamp post on Weaver St. Belfast killing 6 & horrifically maiming 17. This was most likely perpetrated by USC. It was not the first attack of its sort in a Catholic area.
