#OnThisDay 1862 The 10th Tennessee (Sons of Erin) fought for the first time as a full regiment at Erin Hollow, Tennessee. Many were captured but eventually exchanged. When the war ended, of the 720 original volunteers, 121 were causalities: 30 KIA & 90 WIA.
#OnThisDay 1920 An IRA unit, led by Sean Hales attacked Allihies RIC barracks. They blew a 15 foot wide hole in the wall, killed one officer & wounded another. The RIC refused to surrender but soon after pulled out of several barracks in the area.
#OnThisDay 1918 Second Lieutenant Reginald John Collier RAF from Belfast was killed in a flying accident during training. His engine failed & although he managed to right the plane & restart the engine, he crashed into the ground & died instantly.
#OnThisDay 1917 Nurse Caroline Robinette from Piltown, Kilkenny died from pleurisy, aged 28. She was a staff nurse in Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service. Caroline received the Associate Royal Red Cross Medal for her devotion to duty.
#OnThisDay 1817 Bernardo O’Higgins (whose father was from Sligo but never met) & General Captain José de San Martín defeated a Spanish army at the Battle of Chacabuco, Chile. Exactly a year later, O’Higgins approved the Chilean Declaration of Independence. #Ireland #History
