Ned Daly Easter Rising Commandant born in Limerick 1891

#OnThisDay 1891 Edward ‘Ned’ Daly, Commandant in the 1916 Rising was born in Limerick. Daly spent Easter week fighting around the Four Courts where some of the most fiercest fighting took place. Daly was the youngest leader to be executed at the age of 25.

Louisa Nelson receives Military Medal for Heroism during the Easter Rising 1917

#OnThisDay 1917 Louisa Nelson (left) was awarded the Military Medal for Heroism for tending to the wounded while under fire on Mount Street during the Easter Rising from King George V. A Chicago newspaper called her, the ‘bravest colleen in Ireland”. During the Rising, she calmly tended to the dying & wounded ‘through a hail of bullets’ on Mount Street, Dublin. Nelson, a teenager, is among only 150 women to ever receive the award.
