#OnThisDay 1921 The No. 1 Cork Brigade, led by Sean O’Hegarty, ambushed a patrol of 70 Auxiliaries & RIC at Coolavohig, Cork. They killed three Auxies including commander Major Grant & though surrounded by Crown reinforcements, the IRA withdrew without losses.
#OnThisDay 1891 Edward ‘Ned’ Daly, Commandant in the 1916 Rising was born in Limerick. Daly spent Easter week fighting around the Four Courts where some of the most fiercest fighting took place. Daly was the youngest leader to be executed at the age of 25.
#OnThisDay 1920 During an IRA ambush on RIC at Crowes Bridge, Vice Commandant Martin Devitt of the Mid-Clare Brigade “died from a bullet wounded received while fighting for the freedom of his country, which freedom is prevented by mis-government”. He was 25.
#OnThisDay 1917 Louisa Nelson (left) was awarded the Military Medal for Heroism for tending to the wounded while under fire on Mount Street during the Easter Rising from King George V. A Chicago newspaper called her, the ‘bravest colleen in Ireland”. During the Rising, she calmly tended to the dying & wounded ‘through a hail of bullets’ on Mount Street, Dublin. Nelson, a teenager, is among only 150 women to ever receive the award.
#OnThisDay 1854 Daniel Florencio O’Leary died in Bogota. O’Leary was born in Cork to a family of butter merchants & went on to become a Brigadier General under Simón Bolívar. O’Leary’s body was laid to rest near Bolivar’s body in Caracas, Venezuela. #Ireland #History
