#OnThisDay 1965 Sir Roger Casement was repatriated to Ireland nearly fifty years after his execution. Although Casement wished to be buried in Antrim, to prevent an escalation of sectarian tensions, he was given a State Funeral & buried in Glasnevin Cemetery.

#OnThisDay 1919 Séumas Robinson (left) O/C Third Tipperary Brigade ordered all British military & police forces out of South Tipperary and, if they stayed they would be held to have “forfeited their lives”. GHQ did not sanction this threat but it posted anyway. #Ireland #History

#OnThisDay 1317 Edward Bruce’s army camped in Castleknock & planned to attack Dublin. Its citizens burned the western side of the city to deny him any cover in his attack but the fire spread rapidly. This is possibly why Dublin’s crest is three towers burning.

#OnThisDay 1922 Collins secretly establishes a specially-paid, full-time unit of 72 IRA officers & men known as the Belfast City Guard to protect Catholic districts from sectarian attack. Headed by Seamus Woods (right), it continues to function until August 1922.
