#OnThisDay 1916 Karl Spindler, Captain of the captured Aud scuttled his ship to avoid its weapons cargo from falling into British hands. The arming of the Volunteers was not to take place. As it sank, he raised the Imperial German Flag. He was a POW for 2 years

#OnThisDay 1875 Michael “The” O’Rahilly, founding member & Director of Arms of the Irish Volunteers, was born in Kerry. O’Rahilly was opposed to the Rising but said “I’ve helped to wind up the clock, I might as well hear it strike!” He died during the fighting.

#OnThisDay 1855 Pvt Joseph Bradshaw from Dromkeen, Limerick attacked & captured a Russian rifle pit during the Crimean War. For his actions, he was promoted to Corporal & was awarded the Victoria Cross. Bradshaw survived the war & is buried in St. John’s Limerick.

#OnThisDay 1967 PFC Maurice O’Callaghan from Dublin was killed in action in the Que Son Valley in Vietnam. O’Callaghan had joined the @usmarines & graduated in Aug 1966. More Marines died there than were lost at Hue, Khe Sanh or Con Thien. He was 20 years old.

#OnThisDay 1916 The first casualties of the 1916 Rising occurred. Volunteers aimed to seize Valentia Wireless station to create a naval diversion to allow the Aud to land its arms. The car (pic) took a wrong turn & drove off the pier at Killorglin killing three.
