#OnThisDay 1803 An explosion in an arms factory rang out in Dublin. These weapons were intended for Robert Emmet’s rebellion, planned for late August & with French aid. This explosion threw a spanner in the works &brought the date of the uprising to July 23rd.
#OnThisDay 1967 Private John Patrick Collopy, from Limerick, was killed in action when the armoured personnel carrier he was in was hit by an RPG while serving with 22nd Inf. Reg, 4th Inf. Div during the Vietnam War. He died nine days after his 21st birthday.
#OnThisDay 1942 Dubliner Brendan Finucane, the @RoyalAirForce‘s youngest ever Wing Commander, Ace fighter pilot, was hit by ground fire while on a mission over France. He flew his damaged plane out over the English Channel & was never seen again.
#OnThisDay 1927 Constance Markievicz the nationalist, revolutionary, suffragist, first female MP & Easter Rising veteran died. From a wealthy family @LissadellHouse Sligo, she died penniless having donated her money to the poor. She was denied a State burial.
#OnThisDay 1830 Richard Henry Jackson was born in Kinnegad, Westmeath. Jackson joined the US Army as a private in 1851 & was a Brigadier General by 1865. He was Chief of Artillery for the Army of the James X Corps at the Siege of Petersburg.He survived the war.
