#OnThisDay 1922 Emmet Dalton lands 800 soldiers of the Free State Army, artillery & Peerless armoured cars at Passage West, Cork. Further landings take place into the Munster Republic as part of their drive on Cork City. There are several deaths on both sides.
#OnThisDay 1915 Lieutenant Ernest Lawrence Julian 7th (Pals) Royal Dublin Fusiliers was KIA at Gallipoli leading an attack on Chocolate Hill. Julian was Reid Professor of Law @tcddublin, a role that both Mary Robinson & Mary McAleese held in later years.
#OnThisDay 1920 East Limerick Flying Column under Donnchadh O’Hannigan (left) linked with Cork IRA under Tom Barry (right) & ambushed a foot patrol of Black & Tans at Kildorrery, Cork killing one & wounding the rest. Arms & ammo were taken. British reprisals followed.
#OnThisDay 1892 Thomas Falcon Hazell DSO, was born in Roundstone, Galway. Hazell was a pilot in the RFC & RAF & scored 43 victories in 1917–18 making him an Ace & third most successful Irish flying ace of WW1. Unlike the other two, Hazell survived the war.
#OnThisDay 1594 At the Battle of the Ford of Biscuits in Fermanagh, an English army en route to relieve the besieged Enniskillen Castle was defeated by Irish troops under Hugh Maguire & Cormac MacBaron O’Neill. This is generally considered the first major battle of the Nine Years’ War.
