IRA Kidnap B-Specials & Loyalists For Ransom 1922

#OnThisDay 1922 Roughly 40 loyalists & Ulster Constabulary ‘B’ Specials were kidnapped by the IRA. They were held as a ransom & to expedite the release of the three men due to be hanged in Derry jail on 9th Feb & the Monaghan ‘footballers’ arrested in January.

British Army Kill 16y/o Hurler, Cork 1921

#OnThisDay 1921 A British Army convoy opened fire with machine guns on a group of boys hurling in Knocknagree, Cork. Micheal Kelliher (16) was killed & two Herlihy brothers (11& 13) were shot in the thigh & lung but lived. The Army claimed the boys were armed.

Four IRA Men Drown off Galway Coast 1921

#OnThisDay 1921 Four IRA men were drowned when their small boat was caught in a storm as they sailed from Moynis to Roundstone in Galway, to money for arms to a brigade council meeting.

Captain Bowen-Colthurst Released from Broadmoor Hospital 1918

#OnThisDay 1918 Irish papers report that Captain Bowen-Colthurst, who was guilty of the murder of innocent civilians, including Francis Sheehy-Skeffington, during the Easter Rising was released from Broadmoor psychiatric hosp, having served less than two years.

Death of Fenian Co-Founder Col John O’Mahony 1877

#OnThisDay 1877 Col John O’Mahony, from Limerick, died in New York. He was co-founder of the Fenian Brotherhood & Colonel in the NY ‘Fightin’ 69th-Irish Brigade. O’Mahoney did not approve of the Fenian invasion of Canada. He is buried in Glasnevin Cemetery.
