Frances Elizabeth Quinn emigrated from Ireland as a child. Quinn enlisted in the Union Army five times during the American Civil War, each time changing her name & was wounded at the Battle of Stones River. She was discharged but was pardoned by President Lincoln.

Sister Mary Anthony O’Connell “The Irish Florence Nightingale” was from Limerick. During the Battle of Shiloh 1862, Sister Mary combed the firing line for wounded soldiers& treated them. Her system of Battlefield Triage treating patients is still in use today.

Margaret Haughery “Angel of New Orleans” was from Carrigallen, Leitrim. An illiterate business entrepreneur, she opened four orphanages in New Orleans and during the American Civil War fed not only the growing number of orphans but the needy too.
The Headford Ambush, Kerry 1921
#OnThisDay 1921 Thirty Kerry IRA men ambushed a train carrying 30 soldiers from the Royal Fusiliers at Headford train station. Despite a train mounted machine gun the IRA killed 9 & wounded 12 but lost 2 themselves including their Commandant, Daniel Allman.
Irish Divisions “Wiped off the Map” in Germany’s Operation Michael 1918
#OnThisDay 1918 The German Army unleashed Operation Michael, their last roll of the dice to win #WW1. By the end of the Operation in early April, the 16th Irish & 36th Ulster Divisions had lost 7000 men each. An officer wrote “The division has ceased to exist”.
