I have my B.A. in History, my M.A. in Military History and Strategic Studies,a Post Qualification Diploma in History and I've been teaching History for five years now. The Kilmeena Ambush, Mayo 1921

#OnThisDay 1921 IRA ambushed an RIC patrol at Kilmeena, Mayo, killing one & wounding another. Two RIC trucks stopped before the ambush site & Black and Tans snuck up & attacked the IRA, killing five. The Mayo men got their payback a month later at Carrowkennedy

Irish Guards’s Casualties from the Battle of Festubert 1915

#OnThisDay 1915 The Irish Guards were taken off the line at Festubert. In their time in the trenches, twenty-two men were killed, 284 wounded, and 86 missing. As they were leaving the trenches, they were hit by high explosive shells & 10 more were killed.

The Arrest of Lord Edward Fitzgerald 1798

#OnThisDay 1798 Lord Edward Fitzgerald, an Irish aristocrat, soldier, politician & leader of the United Irishmen was shot by Major Sirr during his arrest while evading authorities in Dublin. His location revealed by Francis Magan. Fitzgerald died 2 weeks later.

Michael O’Riordan, Communist Party of Ireland passed away 2006

#OnThisDay 2006 Michael O’Riordan passed away. O’Riordan, from Cork, fought in Connolly’s Column against Fascism in the Spanish Civil War but was wounded & repatriated back to Ireland. He became the secretary general of the Communist Party of Ireland in 1965.

PFC William Francis Murphy KIA Korea 1951

#OnThisDay 1951 PFC William Francis Murphy, from Cork died while in a POW camp during the Korean War. Serving with the 2nd Infantry Division, Murphy had been taken prisoner during fighting in South Korea on February 12, 1951. His remains were never recovered.
