I have my B.A. in History, my M.A. in Military History and Strategic Studies,a Post Qualification Diploma in History and I've been teaching History for five years now. IRA Attack and Burn Trim RIC Barracks 1920

#OnThisDay 1920 Meath IRA attacked Trim RIC barracks, in what Michael Collins called a ‘very big Job’. The IRA attacked while the majority of police were at 8am Sunday Mass. One constable was shot.That night, Auxiliaries looted & burned many places in the town.

All Ireland Hurling Champion Sean Hyde Attacks FSA Kerry 1922

#OnThisDay 1922 Sean Hyde, an All Ireland hurling winner, lead an abortive attack on Free State army in Kerry. Hyde had been close with Michael Collins & was involved in Bloody Sunday. Originally with the FS during the Civil War, he switched sides.

IRA Divisional Map 1921

IRA Organisational Map. A village or town comprised a company; a number of companies formed a battalion&a number of battalions formed a brigade. By July 1921, the IRA had roughly 65 brigades & 297 battalions with a strength of 115,550 Volunteers.

James FitzMaurice Famed Aviator Passed Away 1965

#OnThisDay 1965 James FitzMaurice passed away. He fought at the Somme & after time at the Front, trained as a RAF pilot & was posted to France the day the war ended.He was the co-pilot of the ‘Bremen’, the first transatlantic flight from East to West 1928.

Corporal Frederick Edwards VC 1916

#OnThisDay 1916 Corporal Frederick Edwards, from Cobh, was in an attack on German lines. With all officers casualties & his unit about to retreat, Edwards ran forward, bombed a machine gun nest&saved the charge. For this, he was awarded the Victoria Cross.
