I have my B.A. in History, my M.A. in Military History and Strategic Studies,a Post Qualification Diploma in History and I've been teaching History for five years now. Major General Richard Montgomery Born in Dublin 1738

#OnThisDay 1738 Major General Richard Montgomery was born in Dublin.Montgomery fought in the Seven Years’ War with the British Army.He later joined the Americans to fight for their independence in the Revolutionary War, dying on an ill-fated invasion of Canada.

Nicholas de Sales Prendergast Murdered by Auxiliaries, Fermoy 1920

#OnThisDay 1920 Nicholas Prendergast, from Wexford, an ex-British Army officer & hotel owner was beaten to death by Auxiliaries in a bar in Fermoy. He choked on his dentures. They then dumped his body into a river, which was discovered over a month later.

Eoin O’Duffy Passed Away 1944

#OnThisDay 1944 Eoin O’Duffy died in Dublin. O’Duffy had fought in the War of Independence, became IRA Chief of Staff, Garda Commissioner and then the head of the ACA/Blueshirts, leader of Fine Gael & supported the Fascists under Franco in the Spanish Civil War.

Major General Patrick Cleburne KIA Battle of Franklin 1864

#OnThisDay 1864 Cork-born Major General Patrick Cleburne was one of six Confederate generals killed during the Battle of Franklin, Tennessee. The battle was known as the ‘Pickett’s Charge of the West”. The Army of Tennessee was essentially destroyed here.

The 38th (Irish) Brigade in the Battle of Sangro River 1943

#OnThisDay 1943 The Irish Brigade & the 4th Armoured Brigade attacked the German Army at the Battle of Sangro River, Italy. The tanks were held up by mines at first so the Inniskillings & Irish Fusiliers took their objective &broke the German winter line.
