#OnThisDay 1940 ILV Isolda was sank by German planes off the Waterford/Wexford coast with the loss of 6 crew, despite having “Lighthouse Service” in letters five feet tall on its side. Isolda was bringing relief crews to other light-ships when bombed.

#OnThisDay 1922 Seven IRA men were executed in the Curragh Prison, Kildare. They had attacked the FS Army’s supply lines, trains&shops in the area. An 8th man was shot “while trying to escape” the night of their capture. Three of the seven were still teenagers.

#OnThisDay 1919 The IRA attempted to assassinate the Viscount John French, the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland near the Phoenix Park. Martin Savage, from Sligo, died after he was shot in the neck. Savage had fought in the Rising & subsequently imprisoned in England.

#OnThisDay 1967 Florence O’Donoghue passed away. Florrie was head of intelligence for No.1 Cork Brigade IRA. He remained neutral during the Civil War, hoping to end the hostilities peacefully but this did not occur. He later served in the Irish Army as a major.
