I have my B.A. in History, my M.A. in Military History and Strategic Studies,a Post Qualification Diploma in History and I've been teaching History for five years now. Death of Mathew Brady, Father of Photojournalism 1896

#OnThisDay 1896 Mathew Brady (last pic), the father of photojournalism passed away. Born to Irish emigrants in New York, his Civil War photography is famous. He photographed generals, soldiers & US presidents. His photo of Abraham Lincoln is used on the $5 bill.

Terence Bellew MacManus Dies in San Francisco 1861

#OnThisDay 1861 Terence Bellew MacManus the Young Irelander leader died, an exile in San Francisco. During his trial after the 1848 Rebellion, MacManus explained his actions by saying “It was not because I loved England less, but because I loved Ireland more”.

PFC William Scully from Limerick KIA in Korea 1951

#OnThisDay 1951 William (Billy) Scully from Galbally, Limerick was killed in action in South Korea. Billy had lived in Manhasset, Long Island, NY for a year when he was drafted into the Army. He was in Korea just a few weeks when he was killed by a sniper.

Monaghan IRA Arrested in Disguise 1922

#OnThisDay 1922 Ten Monaghan footballers were arrested by B-Specials in Tyrone en route to a match in Derry. The footballers were senior IRA including Dan Hogan, the commander. This was a front as they were actually planning to break 3 IRA men out of Derry jail.

Connaught Ranger Mutineer Executed in Dundalk 1923

#OnThisDay 1923 Three IRA Vol were executed in Dundalk Jail. One of them, Thomas Murray was a WW1 vet, took part in the Connaught Rangers’ Mutiny in India, imprisoned, released, joined the Free State Army, defected to the IRA & was arrested for arms possession.
