Col James Conroy 165th NY Inf KIA Makin Island 1943

#OnThisDay 1943 Col. James G. Conroy, commander of the 165th Infantry Regiment (the Fighting 69th of New York) was shot dead by a sniper while directing troops on the beach during the landing on Makin Island in the Pacific Theatre.
