The Irish Civil War Ends

#Onthisday 1923 Frank Aiken ordered Anti-Treaty IRA to “dump their arms”& return home. Éamon de Valera says “Further sacrifice on your part would now be in vain and the continuance of the struggle in arms unwise in the national interest. Military victory must be allowed to rest for the moment with those who have destroyed the Republic”. The Civil War is over.

John Condon: Youngest soldier to die in WW1?

#OnThisDay 1915 John Condon from Waterford died during a German chlorine attack on the Western Front. For a long time Condon was considered the youngest soldier to die in #WW1 at 14 years of age. However, he was most likely 18 y/o at death. Still too young. #Ireland #History 

 

The 1798 Rebellion

#OnThisDay the 1798 Rebellion began with attacks on mail coaches from Dublin. Led by the United Irishmen it aimed to establish an independent, sovereign, non-sectarian Irish republic. Wolfe Tone said, ‘to unite Catholic, Protestant & Dissenter under the common name of Irishman’.

Eva Gore-Booth

#OnThisDay 1870 Irish poet & suffragette Eva Gore-Booth was born in Lissadell House, Sligo. Eva campaigned in abolishing the death penalty & helped overturn her sister, Constance Markiewicz’s sentence to life imprisonment after the 1916 Easter Rising. She also attended Roger Casement’s trial in hope of overturning his death penalty too.Eva gore-Booth
