#OnThisDay 1535 Silken Thomas 10th Earl of Kildare surrendered near Maynooth bringing his rebellion to an end.He was sent to London & after 16 months imprisonment in the Tower of London, he along with his five uncles were hanged, beheaded & quartered at Tyburn.
#OnThisDay 1951 Major General Winston Dugan GCMG, CB, DSO, died in London. Dugan was from Birr, Offaly. He fought with distinction in both the Boer War & WW1. He served as Governor of South Australia from 1934 to 1939, then Governor of Victoria until 1949. #Ireland #History
#OnThisDay 1922 General Dan Hogan & a heavily armed Free State column retake Dundalk unopposed. One civilian who failed to stop at a check point was killed. Hogan’s brother was Michael Hogan, Tipperary captain killed in Croke Park on Bloody Sunday. #Ireland #History
#OnThisDay 1922 Dublin Castle, seat of British rule in Ireland for centuries is handed over from the Royal Irish Constabulary to Commission Michael Staines & 380 members of the Civic Guard, later renamed An Garda Síochána.
#OnThisDay 1920 IRA Volunteer Patrick Clancy from Limerick was bayoneted to death by British soldiers. Vol.Sean O’Connell was also killed. Both were arrested & killed while “trying to escape”. Funeral goers were searched, questioned & the young men beaten. #Ireland #History
