#OnThisDay 1919 The Irish Republican Army was formally established by Dáil Éireann. The proposal was by Cathal Brugha & Terence MacSwiney. The IRA was subordinate to Dáil Éireann; the political & military struggle against British rule was thus unified. #Ireland #History
#OnThisDay 1778 Bernardo O’Higgins, one of Chile’s founding fathers, who freed Chile from Spanish rule was born. O’Higgins went on to become Supreme Director of Chile. His father Ambrosio O’Higgins, the Viceroy of Peru, was from Sligo, although the two never met.
#OnThisDay 1907 The Fusiliers Arch at Grafton Street entrance to St. Stephen’s Green was opened. The Fusiliers’ Arch was to commemorate all the men from the Dublin Fusiliers who died in the Second Boer War. Irishmen fought on both sides of this conflict. #Ireland #History
#OnThisDay 1504 The Battle of Knockdoe was fought between the Earl of Kildare & Lord of Clanricarde in Galway. The majority of the fighting was done by Galloglass mercenaries. This battle also saw the first use of a gun, but it was used as a club not a firearm.
#OnThisDay 1579 James Fitzmaurice Fitzgerald, leader of the Desmond Rebellion against Queen Elizabeth’s Munster Plantation died.After a skirmish between his men & his cousin’s, Fitzmaurice killed his betraying cousin Burke but was shot in the chest in doing so.
