#OnThisDay 1920 Michael Brennan O/C East Clare IRA & three men shoot two RIC constables in John Ryan’s bar in O’Brien’s Bridge Clare. One man died instantly, the other later. Brennan may have been injured in his hand in the affray. Pictured below is Brennan later as Lieutenant General in the National Army.
#OnThisDay 1798 Matthew Tone is hanged for treason at Arbor Hill Prison, Dublin. Matthew was the brother of the United Irishmen leader Theobald Wolfe Tone. Matthew was captured after the Battle of Ballinamuck & was one of roughly 200 Irish prisoners to be hanged. #Ireland #History
#OnThisDay 1155 King Henry II held the Council of Winchester to discuss a possible invasion of Ireland. It’s rejected by his mother Empress Matilda who opted to delay it for a later date, but Henry got a Papal Bull from Pope Adrian IV, an English Pope, urging him to invade Ireland to assist in the reform of the governance of the Irish Church and the Irish system of governance according to the Roman ecclesiastical system. The invasion will come in 1169.
#OnThisDay 1922 Tom Barry escaped Gormanston prisoner camp in Dublin. Barry travelled south, to take command of the anti-Treaty IRA Second Southern Division & lead a number of attacks in the Irish Midlands during the remainder of the Irish Civil War. #Ireland #History
#OnThisDay 1920 The IRA, led by Liam Lynch & Ernie O’Malley attack & capture a British Army barracks in Mallow, killing a sergeant & taking a cache of arms & ammo. This is the only barracks to be captured during the war. Later British soldiers burn Mallow town centre in a reprisal causing £1000s in damages and hundreds of local jobs.
