#OnThisDay 1949 Eoin MacNeill passed away. MacNeill was a scholar, politician, professor of early history in @ucddublin & founder of the Irish Volunteers in 1913. MacNeill was almost fooled by the Castle Document in the build up to the Easter Rising. #Ireland #History
#OnThisDay 1920 IRA Vol Matthew Furlong from Wexford, died in the Mater hospital. Furlong had been testing a trench mortar when the live round exploded in the tube badly damaging the left side of his body. Furlong had his leg amputated but passed shortly after.
#OnThisDay 1763 Lord Edward was born in Cartron House, Maynooth. The son of an aristocrat, Edward fought with the British army in America where he became disillusioned & believed that Ireland too should fight for its freedom. 
He joined the United Irishmen in 1796.
#OnThisDay 1920 Seán Treacy was killed in a shootout on Talbot street with British intelligence officers after a Squad operation, he was assigned to, was cancelled. Treacy was one of the group of IRA who ambushed the RIC at Soloheadbeg often quoted as the starting point of the Irish War of Independence. Treacy was 25.
#OnThisDay 1918 Martin Moffat, from Sligo won the Victoria Cross.
“On 14th October 1918 near Ledeghem, Belgium, Private Moffat was advancing with five others across the open when they suddenly came under heavy rifle fire at close range from a strongly held house. Rushing towards the house through a hail of bullets, Private Moffat threw bombs and then, working to the back of the house, rushed the door, killing two and capturing 30 of the enemy.:
Martin survived the war.
