IRA Volunteer Matthew Furlong dies 1920

#OnThisDay 1920 IRA Vol Matthew Furlong from Wexford, died in the Mater hospital. Furlong had been testing a trench mortar when the live round exploded in the tube badly damaging the left side of his body. Furlong had his leg amputated but passed shortly after.

Martin Moffat won the Victoria Cross 1918

#OnThisDay 1918 Martin Moffat, from Sligo won the Victoria Cross.
“On 14th October 1918 near Ledeghem, Belgium, Private Moffat was advancing with five others across the open when they suddenly came under heavy rifle fire at close range from a strongly held house. Rushing towards the house through a hail of bullets, Private Moffat threw bombs and then, working to the back of the house, rushed the door, killing two and capturing 30 of the enemy.:
Martin survived the war.
