#OnThisDay 1914 General Charles FitzClarence VC, from Kildare was killed in action at Polygon Wood, near Zonnebeke, Belgium.He took command of the 1st Guards Brigade with the BEF. FitzClarence was awarded the Victoria Cross for actions during the Boer War.

#OnThisDay 1918 The Great War ended. Roughly 205,000 men from all over Ireland served & around 35,000-50,000 died.The Ireland they returned to was different to the one they left. WW1 ended but another began.Many joined the IRA but others saw enough of war.

#OnThisDay 1880 Ned Kelly, the Irish outlaw & bushranger was hanged in Melbourne Gaol despite a petition signed by 32,000 people asking for a reprieve. (Not military history but still an interesting aspect of the Irish experience in Australia).

#OnThisDay 1922 Erskine Childers, the man who used his personal yacht, the Asgard, to smuggle guns into Howth in 1914 was arrested by Free State soldiers for possession of a pistol. The gun was a gift from Michael Collins, the head of the Provisional Government! #Ireland #History
