#OnThisDay 1920 Fr. Michael Griffin, a priest with republican sympathies, was taken in for questioning by the Black and Tans near Barna, Galway. His body was found a week later in an unmarked grave. He had been shot dead. 12,000 people attended his funeral. #Ireland #History

#OnThisDay 1869 Sir John Lumsden, was born in Drogheda. Lumsden was a doctor & Chief Medical Officer for Guinness. He formed St. John’s Ambulance Brigade, teaching first aid. Lumsden cared for fighters on both sides during the Easter Rising. #Ireland #History @GuinnessIreland

#OnThisDay 2001 Irish army UN Peacekeepers left Camp Shamrock in Lebanon or “The Leb”, after 23 years. 32,000 individuals tours & the deaths of 47 soldiers. Due to hostilities in the area, the Irish @defenceforces returned in 2011.

#OnThisDay 1942 The five “Fighting Sullivan Brothers” were killed in action when their ship they were on, the USS Juneau, was sank by a Japanese sub when leaving the Solomon Islands. The @USNavy have had several ships named in their honour.

#OnThisDay 1920 In Dublin Annie O’Neill, an eight year girl is shot dead while playing outside her house, by one of two British officers who had taken chase after some youths. Reports differ about whether she died before or after her mother found her.
