#OnThisDay 1923 Three men were executed for armed robbery at Birr Castle, Offaly. They were too young to join the AT-IRA but were executed as republican prisoners. So young in fact, that two of them asked for a lemonade 15 minutes before they were shot. #Ireland #History
#OnThisDay 1799 Thomas Charles Wright, the father of the Ecuadorian Navy was born in Drogheda, Louth. Wright was also a general in Simon Bolivar’s army & fought for Ecuador’s and many other South American countries’ independence.

#OnThisDay 1316 Edward Bruce the nominal ‘High King of Ireland’ defeated the army of Justiciar of Ireland Edmund Butler at the Battle of Ardscull (Skerries), Kildare. This was part of the Scottish Wars of Independence. Bruce was a descendant of Aoife McMurrogh. #Ireland #History

#OnThisDay 1923 Michael Fitzgerald was executed by the Free State Army for possession of a weapon. Fitzgerald, from Youghal, had been a Quartermaster in the US Merchant Marine & served in the Royal Navy during #WW1. He also had a 1917-1923 Service Medal for his time in the IRA. Despite this his mother’s claim for his pension in 1953 & 1960 were refused as they claimed he was not a member of the Pre-Truce IRA.
