#OnThisDay 1892 David Mary Tidmarsh was born in Limerick. Tidmarsh was a #WW1 ace pilot with seven recorded wins. David survived the war unlike his brother John & was recalled to the RAF during #WW2 but relinquished his post due to poor health in 1942.
#OnThisDay 1874 Dr Kathleen Lynn was born in Mayo. Lynn supported strikers during the Dublin Lockout & was the Irish Citizens’ Army Chief Medical Officer during the 1916 Rising. She set up St Ultan’s hospital which championed the BCG vaccine for children. #Ireland #History
#OnThisDay 1923 Captain Coye, National Army was killed in an ambush at Feale Bridge, Kerry. Coye was from Galway, fought in the Rising, was imprisoned in Frongoch & fought throughout the War of Independence. Though outnumbered he wouldn’t surrender. He was 28.
#OnThisDay 1923 Joseph Byrne (L)& Patrick Geraghty (R), AT-IRA were executed for alleged possession of weapons. While Geraghty was caught with a pistol, Byrne was unarmed when arrested. Charges were trumped up against Byrne as he was Adjutant of Offaly brigade.
#OnThisDay 1873 Alexander Young V.C. was born in Ballinamana Galway. Young was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions during the Boer War where he charged the enemy & captured their commander, Commandant Erasmus. Young died at the Somme during #WW1 in 1916.
