#OnThisDay 1915 1st Batt Royal Dublin Fusiliers are the first to land at V Beach at Gallipoli. Running out to no cover and under murderous Turkish fire, their casualties are so great that they will suffer 600 out of 1000 in just 48 hours.

#OnThisDay 1915 Major Charles Gordon, from Dublin was KIA at Gallipoli. Gordon was one of some 6600 Irish men who joined the AIF. Gordon & his ANZAC men were cut down in their droves. Munster & Dublin Fusiliers were also present at Gallipoli.

#OnThisDay 1916 Margaret Keogh, from Carlow, became the first civilian casualty of the Easter Rising. A nurse in South Dublin Union (now St. James’ Hospital), she was checking on patients during a lull in the fighting & was shot by two British soldiers. Some records have Margaret as a member of Cumann na mBan and therefore a combatant death, but she wasn’t.
Side note: Margaret was apparently related to Myles Keogh, the General Custer’s right hand man at the Battle of Little Bighorn fame.

#OnThisDay 1916 The first Crown casualty of the Easter Rising is Constable James O’Brien (Uniform-pic on left). He was shot by Sean Connolly (right pic) after barring their entrance to Dublin Castle. Moving into City Hall, Connolly was killed by a sniper shortly after.

#OnThisDay 1916 Patrick Pearse & members of the IRB, Irish Volunteers, Irish Citizen Army & Cumann na mBan take over several key buildings around Dublin. The Easter Rising had begun. They intended to end British rule in Ireland. It would last 6 days.
