#OnThisDay 1916 Margaret Naylor was hit by a stray bullet on Ringsend Draw Bridge. Her husband, Pte. John Naylor of the 8th Royal Dublin Fusiliers, died that very same day when he was gassed in Hulluch, France. She died two days later leaving three orphaned kids.
#OnThisDay 1916 Pearse surrenders unconditionally bringing an end to the Rising. Elizabeth O’Farrell carried the white flag to General Lowe & all rebel positions. It will be Sunday before all garrisons surrender. O’Farrell’s boots & coat can be seen to Pearse’s right. Controversially, she ‘airbrushed’ out of this photo to make Pearse look less dumpy. Many say that this is indicative of the airbrushing of women from Irish history.
#OnThisDay 1916 British soldiers surround all rebel positions. As artillery pounds Sackville (O’Connell) Street, the GPO catches fire. Dublin Fire Brigade leave the area due to intense gun battles in the area. At 8:40pm Pearse orders a complete evacuation.

#OnThisDay 1916 Thomas Ashe & his Volunteers from the Fingal Battalion attack the RIC barracks in Ashbourne. After a five hour firefight the police finally surrendered. Ashe lost 1 man while the RIC lost 10. Ashe took roughly 80 RIC prisoners & vehicles too.

#OnThisDay 1916 Cathal Brugha, second in command of the South Dublin Union garrison was badly wounded in an attack. So badly wounded in fact, that it was thought he would not survive his wounds, yet he still fired on British troops & sang “God Save Ireland”.
