#OnThisDay 1918 CSM Martin Doyle from New Ross, extricated his surrounded company of men, carried wounded officers to safety & singlehandedly took an enemy MG post & prisoners. He was awarded the Victoria Cross. He later joined the IRA as an Intelligence Officer in Clare. He later joined the National Army during the Civil War and served for nearly another three decades with them before retiring.
Though most of his career was spent in the Irish Defence Forces, Doyle was buried in his British Army uniform with his British Army medals and achievements on his gravestone.

#OnThisDay 1950 Cpl Bartholomew Galvin from Annascaul, Kerry was Killed in Action at Changnyong, South Korea during the Korean War. Galvin had enlisted in the 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division from Weymouth, Massachusetts. He is buried in Annascaul.

#OnThisDay 1920 The IRA ambushed an RIC patrol returning from a courts session at Rathra, Roscommon. After a firefight lasting half an hour, two constables were killed (Edward Murphy & Martin McCarthy) as was Volunteer Captain Tom McDonagh.

#OnThisDay 1914 Sgt David Nelson, from Monaghan, brought his guns into action, despite being badly wounded. He spent all his ammo, was then captured but managed to escape & have shrapnel removed from his lung. For this he was awarded the Victoria Cross.

Nelson returned to France as was promoted to Major but was killed in action in the final months of the war.

#OnThisDay 1864 Roger Casement was born in Dublin. Casement was a diplomat &was knighted for his work highlighting the plight of the natives under Belgian Congo & in Peru. He became an Irish nationalist & was the last leader of the Easter Rising to be executed.
