The Death of Dr. Dorothy Stopford Price 1954

#OnThisDay 1954 Dr Dorothy Stopford Price passed away. During the Irish War of Independence, Stopford often tended to wounded IRA Volunteers in Cork. Dr Stopford was also instrumental in the eradication of TB & the introduction of the BCG vaccine for children.

The Trial of Oliver Cromwell’s Corpse 1661

#OnThisDay 1661 Oliver Cromwell’s body was exhumed, dragged through the streets of London, hanged in chains at Tyburn, beheaded & his body thrown into a pit. His head displayed on a pole on the roof of Westminster Hall until 1685.

Palmerstown House Burned by IRA 1923

#OnThisDay 1923 Palmerstown House, home to the 7th Earl of Mayo was burned by the IRA in retaliation for the execution of six IRA prisoners in the Curragh that same day. “It is only right to say”, Lord Mayo recalled, “that the raiders were excessively polite”.

Lt. William Symes Drury Killed in Grenade Training Accident 1916

#OnThisDay 1916 Lt. William Symes Drury, ex-Guinness employee serving with the Dublin Fusiliers, died during a training exercise in France. He threw a grenade with a faulty fuse which exploded immediately, hitting him with shrapnel & killing him instantly.

Death of Helena Molony, Republican, Feminist 1967

#OnThisDay 1967 Helena Molony, republican, trade unionist labour activist & feminist passed away. She joined Inghinidhe na hÉireann, was editor of Bean na hÉireann, joined Cumann na mBan & the Irish Citizen Army, fought in Easter Rising at City Hall.
