I have my B.A. in History, my M.A. in Military History and Strategic Studies,a Post Qualification Diploma in History and I've been teaching History for five years now. Death of Captain Anthony Boyle in Tunisia 1943

#OnThisDay 1943 Captain Anthony Boyle from Portnoo, Donegal was killed in action when taking part in a counter attack on German positions on Stuka Ridge in Tunisia. Boyle was 23 & serving with the 6th Inniskilling Fusiliers.

Death of Frederick Crowley RFC 1918

#OnThisDay 1918 2nd Lt Frederick Crowley, from Bantry, Cork, died when his airplane engine stalled & crashed while on a Royal Flying Corps training exercise in Essex. Crowley had arrived at the base two days previous & was on his third flight.

Coolavohig/ Coolnacaheragh Ambush, Cork 1921

#OnThisDay 1921 Cork IRA, led by Sean O’Hegarty, ambushed a patrol of 46 Auxiliaries at Coolavohig, Cork. They killed three Auxies including commander Major James Seafield Grant. After several hours &RIC reinforcements arriving, the IRA withdrew without losses.

Birth of Easter Rising Leader Ned Daly, Limerick 1891

#OnThisDay 1891 Edward ‘Ned’ Daly was born in Limerick. Daly, Commandant of Dublin 1st Batt spent Easter Week holding the strategic Four Courts & areas around it where fierce fighting took place. Daly was the youngest leader to be executed at the age of 25.

Birth of Antarctic Explore Tom Crean, Kerry 1877

#OnThisDay 1877 Tom Crean, the Antarctic explorer was born near Annascaul, Kerry. Crean joined the Royal Navy & rose through the ranks before volunteering for the first of three Antarctic expeditions, most famously with Kildare born Ernest Shackleton in 1914-17.
