#OnThisDay 1921 Six IRA Volunteers were executed in Victoria (Collins) Barracks, Cork. Five of whom had been captured at the Dripsey ambush. They were:

#OnThisDay 1898 Fr Hugh O’Flaherty was born in Cork. ‘The Scarlet Pimpernel of the Vatican’ was a major figure of the Catholic resistance to Nazism. He avoided SS assassination attempts & saved the lives of 6500 Allied soldiers & Jewish civilians during WW2.
#OnThisDay 1916 Pte James Crozier, from Belfast, was executed for desertion. Crozier was filled with rum beforehand & had to be carried to the post, where he was hooked onto like ‘meat in a butcher’s shop’, boasted Frank Crozier (of later, Auxiliary ‘fame’). His execution squad were men of his own battalion and they shot wide so he was shot in the head by the officer.
#OnThisDay 1830 Major General Baron Johann O’Brien passed away in Pressburg (now Bratislava). O’Brien joined the Austrian Army & fought at various battles against Napoleon e.g. Jedlesee. Twice he had a horse shot from under him &was once bayonetted but survived.
#OnThisDay 1735 Thomas Conway was born in Ireland. Conway joined the Irish Brigade of France & later Americans in the Revolutionary War. Conway tried to have George Washington replaced, to no effect. He returned to France, fought for the king & was exiled.
