#OnThisDay 1770 British soldiers fired upon a crowd (of “saucy boys”) in what became known as The Boston Massacre. Among the five civilians killed, was Patrick Carr from Ireland who died 9 days later. Carr forgave the soldiers & said they fired in self defence.
#OnThisDay 1898 Major General Emmet Dalton was born (and died 1978) in Dublin. He fought in WW1, then joined the IRA & became Director of Intelligence. He was in charge of the shelling of the Four Courts & was at Beal na mBlath. Retired in 1922 & made movies.
#OnThisDay 1888 Grace Gifford was born in Rathmines, Dublin. Gifford was a cartoonist & artist as well as an Irish Nationalist&Sinn Fein Executive member. She used her art to promote Sinn Fein policy. She was Anti-Treaty & spent time in jail during the Civil War.
#OnThisDay 1804 Over 200 United Irishmen, led by Philip Cunningham, exiled to Australia as convicts after the 1798 Rebellion organise a small scale insurrection against British Rules in New South Wales. It was quashed the next day by Militia at Castle Hill.
#OnThisDay 1778 Robert Emmet, the Irish nationalist & revolutionary leader was born at 109 St. Stephen’s Green, Dublin. Emmet’s abortive rebellion in 1803 saw him captured & executed for high treason. The whereabouts of his remains are still unknown.
