#OnThisDay 1916 The first casualty of the Easter Rising is Constable James O’Brien (top). He was shot by Sean Connolly (bottom) after barring their entrance to Dublin Castle. Moving into City Hall, Connolly was killed by a sniper shortly after.

#OnThisDay 1916 Patrick Pearse, Connolly & members of the IRB, Irish Volunteers, Irish Citizen Army & Cumann na mBan take over several key buildings around Dublin. The Easter Rising had begun. They intended to end British rule in Ireland. It would last 6 days.
The Royal Ulster Rifles at the Battle of Imjin River 1951
#OnThisDay 1951 At the Battle of Imjin River during the Korean War, the Royal Ulster Rifles & 8th Irish Hussars were pushed back across the river by Chinese forces. RUR were the rearguard as the Brigade withdrew & although outnumbered they held the line.
The Countermanding Order 1916
#OnThisDay 1916 Eoin MacNeill’s countermanding order appeared in the Sunday Independent cancelling all mobilisation orders. Not all Volunteers see the order & some mobilise anyway. The Rising is postponed 24 hours & will take place the next day, Easter Monday.
The Anti-Conscription General Strike 1918
#OnThisDay 1918 The ITGWU & the Irish Trade Union Congress announced a one day countrywide general strike against the introduction of conscription in Ireland. The strike worked and conscription was never introduced here.
