I have my B.A. in History, my M.A. in Military History and Strategic Studies,a Post Qualification Diploma in History and I've been teaching History for five years now. The Knocklong Rescue 1919

#OnThisDay 1919 Seán Hogan celebrated his 18th birthday by being rescued from police custody by his friends following gun fight on a train with RIC. This was known as the Knocklong Ambush/Rescue. Two RIC were killed & both sides had wounded (Breen & Treacy).

Aftermath of Gallipoli Landings for the Munster Fusiliers 1915

#OnThisDay 1915 The Munster Fusiliers mustered for parade 18 days after they landed in Gallipoli. Only 5 officers & 372 enlisted men were present out of an original 25 officers & 900 enlisted men.

The Court-Martial of Captain Eileen McGrane 1921

#OnThisDay 1921 Captain Eileen McGrane, had her courts-martial. McGrane was the first woman to be courts-martialled in the WoI. She was charged with High Treason following an Auxie raid on her flat found arms & IRA intelligence documents.

Seán MacDiarmada Executed in Kilmainham Gaol 1916

#OnThisDay 1916 Sean Mac Diarmada, from Kiltyclogher, Leitrim was executed in Kilmainham Gaol for his role in the Easter Rising. Before his death he wrote “I feel happiness the like of which I have never experienced. I die that the Irish nation might live!”
