MnáMondays: Lily Bennett the Second Female Death of the the Civil War 1922

Lily Bennett was the second Cumann na mBan member to be killed during the Irish Civil War. Bennett was attending a rally held by The Republican Prisoners’ Defence Committee in Dublin when a convoy of National troops machine-gunned the crowd, mortally wounding Lily.

MnáMondays: Mary Hartnett; First Female Death of the Civil War 1922

Margaret ‘Mary’ Hartney was the first Cumann na mBan member killed during the Irish Civil War. In August, Hartnett was providing first aid in IRA HQ in the Dunraven Arms hotel in Adare, Limerick when the building suffered a direct hit by Free State artillery.

The Irish Civil War Begins 1922

#OnThisDay 1922 The Irish Civil War began with the Free State Army shelling of the Four Courts in Dublin, held by the IRA. The FS army used loaned British artillery (& possibly British soldiers to man the guns). A short, violent conflict raged for almost a year

The Connaught Rangers Mutiny, India 1920

#OnThisDay 1920 The Connaught Rangers mutinied over the British Army fighting in Ireland. 14 were sentenced to death but only one sentence was carried out, that of James Daly (Front right). He was the last soldier in the British Army to be executed for mutiny.

Brigadier General Cuthbert Lucas was captured by the IRA, Cork 1920

#OnThisDay 1920 Brig General Cuthbert Lucas was captured by the IRA near Fermoy, Cork. He was held in captivity for four weeks in Clare where he played cards, drank whiskey (a bottle a day) & even saved the hay. He got on well with the IRA & was later released.
