Death of Dan Breen 1969

#OnThisDay 1969 Dan Breen, one of the most famous revolutionaries during the War of Independence, passed away. Breen was at Soloheadbeg & soon had a price of £10,000 on his head after his many daring actions during the war. 10,000 people attended his funeral.

SS Adela Sank Leaving Dublin 1917

#OnThisDay 1917 SS Adela left Dublin for Liverpool carrying cattle & cargo when it was sunk by the German submarine U-100 killing 24 crew, 12 from Dublin. Only the captain, Michael Tyrell survived. Just hours before, U-100’s torpedoes missed RMS Leinster.

Red Hugh O’Donnell Leaves Ireland for Good 1601

#OnThisDay 1601, After the crushing defeat at Kinsale and most of his lands in Tyrconnell in his enemy’s control, Red Hugh O’Donnell left Ireland in order to seek financial & military aid from Spain. O’Donnell never returned, he died less than a year later.

Easter Rising Prisoners Released from British Jails 1916

#OnThisDay 1916 It is reported that some of the last rebels of the Easter Rising are released from British jails, like Frongoch a.k.a the University of Revolution. Many of the released would lead the War of Independence like Michael Collins, fifth from right.

Birth of William Kenealy VC in Wexford 1886

#OnThisDay 1886 L/Cpl William Kenealy VC was born in Wexford. Kenealy served with the Lancaster Fusiliers in Gallipoli. Under withering fire (700 casualties in 24hrs), he tore down barbed wire & enabled his Reg. to take the high ground & secure the beach.
