#OnThisDay 1942 Lt-Cmdr Eugene Esmonde, from Tipperary, led six planes in an attack, with little chance of success, against the well defended German ships Scharnhorst, Gneisenau & Prinz Eugen. All 6 planes were shot down & Esmonde received a posthumous VC.
