#OnThisDay 1915 At the 2nd Battle of Ypres (Battle of Bellewaarde) the German Army released chlorine gas on three Irish units on the frontline, the Royal Irish Regiment, Royal Dublin Fusiliers & Royal Irish Fusiliers. Despite having gas masks and respirators the Royal Irish Regiment’s casualties were 17 Officers & 378 other ranks. It was rare to have such total losses in a single attack.
