#OnThisDay 1923 Liam Deasy, AT-IRA O.C. First Southern Division was captured by FS troops near Clonmel. Deasy had fought in major engagements like Crossbarry against the British & was present at Béal na mBláth. Deasy had ordered the ambushing party to leave the area as they thought Collins wasn’t returning through the area but Colins appeared just as the rearguard were pulling out. Their shots caught the attention of the rest of the ambushing party who returned. Deasy avoided execution by ordering his men to surrender.
