Daniel Daly Two-Time Recipient of the Medal of Honor

#OnThisDay 1915 Daniel Daly, US Marines, led his 30 men against an enemy force of 400 at the Battle of Fort Dipitie. For this action, Daly would receive his second Medal of Honor. His first was in 1900 during the Boxer Rebellion in China. Daly is one of two Marines to be awarded the MOH for two different actions.
Daly is also famous for shouting “Come on, you sons of bitches, do you want to live forever?” to his men during the Battle of Belleau Wood in WW1. Although his words may have been exaggerated over time.
Daly was of Irish descent.

Tooreen Ambush 1920

#OnThisDay 1920 Tom Barry & his Third Cork Brigade ambushed a column of Essex Regiment soldiers at Tooreen, Cork. The IRA killed 3, including commander Lt. Dixon, wounded 5-6 & took a tidy cache of arms. Reprisals in Bandon by the Essex Regiment followed.

Royal Scots kill 70 year old man in Clare 1920

#OnThisDay 1920 Charles Lynch, a 70 year old man was shot dead by L/Cpl McPherson of the Royal Scots. Lynch from near Miltown Malbay, Clare was trying to prevent two soldiers looting his house. The Scots, RIC and Black and Tans then burned the Lynch home.
