#OnThisDay 1914 Lieutenant Edward Cormac-Walshe from Crossmolina, Mayo died of his wounds suffered in battle on October 21st. Walshe had been a student in @tcddublin & joined the 2nd Batt Leinster Regiment at the outbreak of war. He was just 22.

#OnThisDay 1883 Elizabeth O’Farrell was born in Dublin city. O’Farrell was a nurse, gaeilgeoir &member of Cumann na mBan. O’Farrell is probably best remembered for her role in the 1916 Rising as a messenger & carrying Pearse’s surrender letter to General Lowe.

#OnThisDay 1922 Ernie O’Malley, Commander of the Anti-Treaty forces during the Civil War is captured by Free State soldiers following a shootout on Ailesbury Road, Dublin. O’Malley is shot 20 times. He killed a soldier but also shot Anno O’Rahilly in the face. #Ireland #History
The Nenagh burning by British soldiers 1920
#OnThisDay 1920 No. 1 Tipperary Brigade Flying Column ambushed & shot intelligence officer Lieutenant H.J. Hambleton. His last words were supposedly “You bastards, you got me at last”. His unit, the Northamptonshire Regiment burned premises in Nenagh that night.

The Battle of Ballinalee 1920
#OnThisDay 1920 Sean MacEoin & Longford IRA men defend the village of Ballinalee from 11 truck loads of Black and Tans who aimed to set it alight. The firefight began at 11pm on the 2nd & the Black and Tans pulled out at 5am. The Irish suffered no casualties.
