#OnThisDay 1922 Erskine Childers, the gun smuggling Irish Republican was executed by the Free State for illegal possession of a gun. Before he was shot, he shook hands with the firing squad & told them to stand closer to make it easier for them. His son later became the fourth President of Ireland.

#OnThisDay 1913 The Irish Citizen Army was formed in Dublin by James Larkin, James Connolly & Jack White. The ICA was founded to protect trade union workers on strike from the police during the Dublin Lockout. They would later fight in the Easter Rising in 1916.

The “Manchester Martyrs” publicly executed 1867

#OnThisDay 1867 The ‘Manchester Martyrs’ were publicly hanged outside of Salford Gaol in front of a crowd of 10,000 people. William Allen, Michael Larkin, & Michael O’Brien were executed for the death of a policeman during a rescue of two incarcerated Fenians. #Ireland #History

Bloody Sunday Evening: Three Men shot by Auxiliaries ‘while trying to escape’ from Dublin Castle. 1920

#OnThisDay 1920 in the evening of Bloody Sunday three men were taken prisoner in Dublin Castle, tortured & shot while ‘trying to escape”. They were Peadar Clancy (L), Dick McKee (R) & Conor Clune. Both Clancy & McKee were active IRA members but Clune was not. Clune was a translator who was in the hotel where the Clancy and McKee were picked up.

#OnThisDay 1920 Bloody Sunday occurred. Roughly 100 members of the Auxiliaries & RIC fired over 200 rounds into the crowd at Croke Park. 13 killed including Tipperary Captain Michael Hogan & 3 boys who were aged 10, 11 & 14. Jeannie Boyle was 25 & due to be married in 5 days died that day too.
