#OnThisDay 1887 Winifred Carney was born in Bangor, Co.Down. Carney was a trade unionist, suffragist & a revolutionary. She joined Cumann na mBan, was the first woman in the GPO during the 1916 Rising (armed with a revolver and typewriter) & steadfastly refused to leave wounded Connolly’s side.
#OnThisDay 1831 Major General Robert H.G. Minty was born in Westport. He served in the 4th Michigan Cavalry Regiment, the “Sabre Brigade” as Minty was known for leading sabre raids into the enemy ranks. Minty’s unit, 4th Michigan captured Confederate President Jefferson Davis.
#OnThisDay 1923 Sergeant James Woods, Garda Síochána was killed by masked men looking for weapons & Garda uniforms in Scartaglin barracks, Kerry.This was after the hostilities of Civil War had passed. Woods was one of the first Gardaí to die in the line of duty.
#OnThisDay 1917 Major Edmund Fitzgerald Smyth MC from Banbridge, Down, was killed in action at Cambrai. Smyth’s relatives were killed by the IRA, one in the Cork Club after calling on police to shoot civilians on sight & the other shot in a raid to catch Dan Breen.
