#OnThisDay 1691 Following the Treaty of Limerick, Patrick Sarsfield & 19,000 Irish people left Cork to fight in the armies of France (and most armies of Europe) in what became known as ‘The Flight of the Wild Geese’. Many were never to see their homeland again.
#OnThisDay 1922 The last British troops leave Dublin following the creation of the Irish Free State on 6th December. General Macready marched the last 5,000 soldiers out of Royal Barracks, now Collins’ Barracks. See video

#OnThisDay 1920 The East Limerick IRA led by Donncadh O’Hannigan ambushed a patrol of British soldiers from the Lincolnshire Reg. at near Mitchelstown, Limerick. The IRA had a Maxim machinegun & used this to kill 2 & wound three. Then the IRA disarmed the rest.
#OnThisDay 1823 Oliver Pollack from Tyrone, passed away. Pollack was a merchant who helped finance the US Revolutionary War, like the Illinois Campaign & brought Spain in on the colonist’s side. He is also accredited with the creation of the dollar sign!
#OnThisDay 1961 Irish @UN Peacekeepers take part in the Battle of the Tunnel, a communications line, in Elizabethville, Congo. They lost 3 men but achieved their objective. 14 Distinguished Service medals were awarded in Ireland’s first offensive mission abroad.
